As a kid, it didn’t occur to me there was anything wrong with shooting the parachutes of the other pilots. They were, after all, the enemy. From my perspective, I was simply being thorough. More than two decades after the events of today’s comic, I still remember the stern tone of reprimand my Dad used as he explained to me why he disapproved of my overzealous attempts to ensure victory. The bottom line, of course, was that certain actions cross the line, and are immoral. It seems obvious now, but as a kid the idea of combatant/non-combatant seemed a strange distinction to make.
