VOLANTYNYS DAY

Happy Valentine’s day!

Have you ordered yourself a heart shaped pizza yet? Or are you splitting it with someone?

Well, either way, you should find this next paragraph a true grammatical delight, and fitting of this most lovey-dovey of days.

In 1382, Geoffrey Chaucer spoke of romantic love in a poem: “Parlement of Foules”.

His exact words were:

“For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make”.

Super hot, right?

The modern translation is:

“For this was on St. Valentine’s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate.”

Is that.. better?

Well, it may not have you hot and bothered, per se, but it is… um, informative, right?

Scholars made for poor poets, in my opinion.

Speaking of words…

At times I’ve seen people type the word “kewl”, rather than simply “cool”. However, I’d never actually heard someone pronounce it that way. In fact, I didn’t realize it was even possible. I’m usually able to mimic nuances like that, but not this time. I tried, and I tried, but my tongue just can’t seem to do it. I’m not sure if it’s a linguistic thing, but my English speaking tongue is simply incapable of approximating it.

“Kewl”

See, I can’t do it. I just tried again, and it most certainly doesn’t sound right. Not the way I heard it pronounced, anyway.

For today’s art, you’re again seeing some WIP of ol’ Brigdehl, from GREEN KNIGHT, resplendent in all his frumpy, robed glory.

He’s actually one of relatively few sources of humor in the game.

He’s not sexy though.

Were you… expecting something sexy, or risque, for Valentine’s Day?

Oh.

Would you settle for a quick redesign of his character? Like, in a… banana hammock, or something?

Yeah.

Well.

Lemme um, get on that.
